The Biosystematics Group specialises in the flora of tropical Africa and cultivated plants. A large collection of plant material is sheltered in Herbarium Vadense (WAG), which participates in the Nationaal Herbarium Nederland. It also contributes to the international PROTA programme, which aims at an inventory and description of the useful plants of tropical Africa; it is a continuation of the successful PROSEA programme, which covers South-East Asea.
