The foundation supports young African scientists to study their flora either in their own country or in Wageningen through fellowships usually of modest size.

The foundation is named after a very useful tree in Gabon: the Moabi (Baillonella toxisperma).
The Moabi is a strikingly magnificent giant of the forest of Central Africa, a tree whose survival is threatened by the great demand for its fruits, seeds, bark and timber.
